How it works
-
Export from QuickBooks Desktop.
Use QuickBooks Desktop's own export files. We're designing the import around your lists, opening balances and (optionally) your Journal report. Exact steps coming soon.
-
Import into OneTimeBooks.
Open the app in your browser and bring those export files in.
-
Keep going.
Record income and expenses, upload bank statements, create PDF invoices, check your profit and loss, and save a backup file.
What it does NOT do
We'd rather tell you now than surprise you later:
- No payroll. If you pay employees, you'll need a separate payroll service.
- No tax filing. It gives you a sales-tax summary and a profit and loss report. It doesn't file anything for you.
- No live bank connection. You download a statement (CSV) from your bank and upload it. We don't connect to your bank account.
- No inventory or multi-currency. It's built for simple, single-currency books.
- No rebuilding of old invoices one by one. We're designing the import to bring past transactions from your Journal report, but old invoices won't be recreated as individual invoices.
- No tax or legal advice. For that, talk to your accountant.
Thinking of cancelling QuickBooks Desktop? Export your books first.
Intuit's help page says that if you cancel a QuickBooks Desktop subscription, you'll need to re-activate it to open and view your company file. (Intuit help page)
Our free step-by-step guide shows which files and reports to save while your subscription is still active, whatever you choose next.

Why we're building this
In September 2024 Intuit stopped selling new US subscriptions to QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus. Existing users can still renew. If you just want to keep simple books on your own computer without a yearly bill, we're building OneTimeBooks for you.
FAQ
Where is my data kept?
On your computer, not our servers. Your books are stored in your browser on this computer. Clearing your browser's data can delete them, so keep a backup file. Private or incognito windows don't keep them at all. Computers can also break, so save the one-click backup file regularly and keep a copy somewhere safe. We remind you to back up. We can't see your books, so we can't recover them for you.
If you join the waitlist, we keep only your email, your QuickBooks version (if you give it) and the time you signed up.
Can I bring my data over from QuickBooks?
From QuickBooks Desktop, that's the plan. We're designing the import to bring over your chart of accounts, customers, vendors and opening balances from QuickBooks Desktop export files, with optional transaction history from your Journal report. Exact import details coming soon. It won't rebuild old invoices one by one, and it won't bring over inventory, payroll or multi-currency.
Does it work on Mac and Windows?
Yes. It runs in your web browser on Windows or Mac, with nothing to install.
What if I need payroll?
OneTimeBooks doesn't do payroll. If you pay employees, you'll need a separate payroll service.
Is there a subscription?
No. You pay once. All version-1 updates are free. A future major version may be an optional paid upgrade. If you don't upgrade, you can keep using version 1 - it won't stop working.
What's your refund policy?
30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. If OneTimeBooks isn't right for you, ask within 30 days of buying and you'll get a full refund.
When will it be ready?
We're building it now. Waitlist members hear first.
